VOICE CRACKS
First born during the Q-O2 residency in Brussels, Voice Cracks is a performantive song cycle and installation, where composer and performer Rūta Vitkauskaitė explores her own invented sound-words, and instead of conventional singing techniques – whisperings, breathings and imperfections of her voice. It starts with audio gradually growing sound installation, and the five songs emerge from it until the whole cycle concludes on ever-lasting bell meditation. The Voice Cracks will be performed through Silent Disco equipment, listeners will wear headphones that will submerge each attendee into surround of sounds while blocking out the world outside. The cycle is inspired by healing techniques, that resemble work of herbalists and healers of Baltic states and from the rest of the world. The songs are interlacing and anchoring around the main song in the cycle: 'Rūta'. This song is named after an ancient Lithuanian word, often encountered as onomatopoeia in traditional polyphonic songs: Sutartines. It is also a herb - a flower of virginity in Lithuanian folklore; a very strong antibiotic that provokes abortion in herbal medicine; and it also happens to be the name of the artist who created this work.
